ABC Wednesday - D

D is for Dragon FruitThe first time that I ever saw a Dragon Fruit was at Makane Yehuda souk in Jerusalem. What a beautiful color, magenta as magenta could be. Although I didn't see any some of the dragon fruit have white or red centers. The dragon fruit is native to Central and South America but now is grown in Asian countries as well. In Spanish it is called pitaya and is part of the cactaceae family. Legend has it, by the Asian marketers, that the fruit was created thousands of years ago by a fire breathing dragon and when he breathed the fire the last to come out of his mouth was this fruit. Nice story, I knew there was a reason that I didn't like dragons. Although the fruit is beautiful to behold, in my opinion it is a rather dull tasting fruit, just sweet.

Well, it may be bland, but it makes a beautiful photo! Interesting history as well. Thanks for sharing!

Dragon fruit it's called, eh? I wondered. We had the white kind on the flight out of Bangkok. (Sydney to London, a flight of FOUR meals, imagine how long that was). I never saw it in the shuk; will have to look more closely at the exotics.
Glad to be home again and getting back to my favorite blogs.
Shalom to you.

Isn't that the most beautiful pinkish red? Great D-choice. Have seen them but never tasted it. Can't buy them in the supermarkets or greengrocers here. Only wholesalers for restaurants and businesses have them. Next time I'm there I will buy some, to taste and see if I agree with you.

It looks beautiful and tasty, but you said it is has a dull taste. I have never seen dragon fruit. I learn new things each time I go visiting other blogs. I like the legend that goes with it.

Interesting. It does look too magenta tinted to be tasty. Strange. Maybe it did flame from a dragon. :) Great picture.

Our dragon fruits are mostly with white flash. They are very good looking with red skin and blck seeds and used in delicate fruit presentation. I agree with you that its taste is not that distinct, often not even sweet. But yours seems very juicy.

I've seen them around at times, but never tried them. I love the legend - but then, I would!
